January 2015

January was a relatively quiet month on the school travel events front, many schools are just getting back into routine after winter break. This month the travel education officer was busy visiting schools to support action planning activities and providing parental talks across the study area. One of our biggest events this month took place very near the Limerick Smarter Travel Offices.....Bridge St.

Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh launch their La Siul!

Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh Secondary School is an inner city secondary school with in excess of 500 students in attendance. Junior Cert students stepped up to the challenge of organizing a travel action day following walk-ability audits and mapping workshops with 2nd years in November 2014. This work formed part of an action project for their CSPE module on stewardship. As part of this action project, the students created videos and posters to raise awareness about sustainable travel and arranged ‘walking groups’ from the park & stride locations identified by 2nd year groups in November. On 21st January they launched their first 'Walk on Wednesday' or 'La Siul' where they actively encouraged everyone to try and walk, park & stride or cycle to school. It was a brilliant morning and final survey results indicate that they achieved a 14% increase in the number of students walking/park & striding to school!! Well done  GC Luimnigh!!
