Sustainable School Travel

As part of the Limerick Smarter Travel schools programme we will be looking at ways to help you encourage the uptake of more sustainable travel options (walking, cycling, scooting, shared transport) in your school. As part of your programme you will have the support of a dedicated school travel officer who will take you through the steps to travel success. Please visit www.limericksmartertravel.ie for further details.

Walking to School

Walking to school provides
children with the opportunity to build on safety lessons learnt in school and put them into practice. Good habits learned young are learned well. Teaching your child to walk safely to school will stand them in good stead for the rest of their life. The Limerick Smarter Travel School Project has introduced a series of initiatives based on An Taisces Green-Schools Travel Programme(link is external) which aim to raise awareness about walking to school. Examples of these include 'Walk on Wednesday', 'Walk-Ability Audits', 'Walk in the City' and 'Walk Smart'. Further details on these are available here

Walk to School
Cycling to School
The Limerick Smarter Travel School Project is working with schools to promote cycling as a positive mode of transport. As part of our school travel programme we offer schools interactive workshops, resources and lesson plans which will provide the students of limerick with a firm grasp on safer cycling skills and an increased awareness of the benefits of cycling in general. Further information on cycling initiatives offered as part of the schools programme are available here

Cycle to School
Scooting to School
Scooting to school is a relatively new phenomenon for school journeys which is being quickly adopted across the country. It is safe, easy and an excellent alternative to car travel for short journeys. The schools programme is currently offering scooter training workshops to participating schools as part of their school travel action planning process. Further details are available here

Scoot to School

Shared Transport
If walking or cycling is not an option why not try shared transport modes such as buses or car sharing. In September of each year we work with Bus Eireann to deliver interactive bus workshops on city buses. This initiative ' bus in the city' is available by application as spaces are limited thus if you are interested in participating in this event please notify us as soon as possible. Further details on this workshop are available from here . Please visit our website for information about bus transport networks and car sharing options across the study area
