Smarter Travel

Smarter Travel Policy 2009-2020
'Smarter Travel' is the transport policy for Ireland that sets out how the vision of a sustainable travel and transport system can be achieved. Sustainable travel refers to alternative modes of transport such as walking, cycling, scooting or shared transport (public transport/carpooling). Limerick is one of three demonstration areas for smarter travel currently underway as part of the Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport (DTTAs) 'Smarter Travel Areas Programme'.  These projects are being delivered by each Local authority (Limerick, Dungarvan and Westport) in partnership with the DTTAs, local businesses, schools and communities and will run to 2016.

The aim of Smarter Travel is to get us all to think about how and why we make travel choices for all the trips we make.  It's about considering the impact our travel decisions have on others and on ourselves. Do we need to drive to the local shop to pick up the paper or could we walk? Do we need to drive to work or could we cycle? If we have to drive the kids to school could we car share with other parents in our neighborhood? Do we need a lift to the airport or could we get a bus?

Limerick Smarter Travel
Limerick City has been designated as one of three centers in Ireland that have become Ireland's first Smarter Travel Demonstration Areas. Limerick Smarter Travel is collaboration between the Local Authorities and the University. It aims to reduce car dependence and promote walking, cycling, car sharing and public transport. The Limerick submission was ranked first of all submissions received by the Department of Transport from the local authorities in Ireland. Limerick will receive funding over the next four years to roll out a wide range of measures and interventions targeted at encouraging people to use more sustainable modes of transport and to engage in transport planning.

The Limerick Smarter Travel study area is comprised of four 'smarter travel hubs' namely Castletroy, Corbally, Limerick City and Regeneration. Our team will be working with communities, campuses and workplaces to support the uptake of more sustainable modes of transport such as walking, cycling and shared transport. Infrastructural works will also be completed in tandem with the behaviour change aspect of the project. Please visit our website for further information on the various aspects of the project.

Limerick Smarter Travel Study Area (2012-2016)

Schools are an integral part of this project where we hope to liaise with schools to:

  • Raise awareness of sustainable travel options;
  • Identify barriers to walking or cycling to school;
  • Increase regular walking, cycling or Park and Striding to school
  • Improve safety on the school journey
  • Reduce congestion at the school gate and local area
  • Improve health and fitness by promoting active school travel
  • Support the above initiatives with infrastructural improvements.

Limerick Smarter Travel will be working with An Taisces Green-Schools Travel Programme to deliver the ‘Limerick Smarter Travel School Project’. The pilot phase of the Limerick Smarter Travel School Project is already complete where much baseline data was gathered and new initiatives such as route mapping, bike exchanges and repair days introduced. Green-Schools Travel is delighted to be part of this new and exciting project for Limerick. Further details on this project are available from www.limericksmartertravel.ie
